Licensed Practical Nurses pursuing an Associate of Science in Nursing may elect to enroll in the LPN-ASN track. The goal of the track is to facilitate educational mobility from Licensed Practical Nursing to Registered Nurse practice at the associate degree level. In the program, LPNs will be able to progress with successful completion of a skills practicum and a challenge exam to assess previous nursing knowledge and skill. Seven hours of nursing credit may be awarded, which is determined by the successful completion of the LPN transition course, NURS 1014 (Introduction to Professional Role), successful completion of the skills practicum, and earning a grade of “C” or higher on the challenge exam.

Approval and Accreditation
The ASN program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3390 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30326, telephone 404-975-5000, www.acenursing.org. The most recent decision made by the ACEN Board of Commissioners for the ASN program is Continuing Accreditation. The ASN Program is
approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN),, 17373 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70810, telephone 225-755-7500, www.lsbn.state.la.us. The most recent decision made by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (LSBN) is full approval.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the LPN-ASN program option, students must meet the following criteria:

Hold an unencumbered LPN license in the state of Louisiana.

Be unconditionally admitted to LSUA with Nursing as major (see Categories of Admission for admission procedures).

Be enrolled in courses at LSUA during the semester of application

Attain a grade of “C” or higher in each of the required prerequisite courses.

Complete all prerequisite courses by the end of the semester of application. (Fall admission will remain conditional on completion of summer course work).

BIOL 1161 and BIOL 1162 must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher within five years of application. Transfer credit for BIOL 1162 will be awarded if the courses are completed with a grade of “C” or higher within five years of application to the ASN program.

Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application. An overall GPA of 2.5 or higher must be maintained through the end of the term of the semester of application and through the summer term for fall admission. Students with a baccalaureate degree or higher may choose to have their admission to the program based on their cumulative GPA at the time of application or the GPA for the prerequisite courses. If applicants choose to have their admission based on their GPA for the prerequisite courses, they must indicate that choice on their application. Refer to Nursing Student Handbook.

Students are advised to regularly check LSUA email for information related to the application process. Applications will be available two weeks prior to submission deadline established by the nursing program. Late applications will not be accepted.

Submit all official grades from other universities by May 1 for fall selection, and by December 1 for spring selection. Students may not be enrolled at another university during the semester of application.

Be approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing to enter clinical courses.

Note: Students who have successfully completed NURS 1019 with a passing score of 77% on the challenge exam will receive credit for NURS 1030 and NURS 1032 . Credit for NURS 1031 is received through successful completion of the skills practicum. To progress directly into the second semester of clinical nursing courses, the LPN must have completed ENGL 1002 with a “C” or higher. The skills practicum and the challenge exam MUST be completed by the conclusion of NURS 1019 . If student is advancing directly into NURS 1040 /NURS 1041 /NURS 1042 , BIOL 1162 may be taken concurrently. Should the student be unsuccessful in either skills practicum or challenge exam, those courses will be required before the student progresses further in the nursing program. For example: If the student is successful in the skills practicum but not in the challenge exam, the student will receive credit for NURS 1031 but would be required to successfully complete NURS 1030 and NURS 1032 .
